Popular Escape Room Themes

The beauty of puzzle games is that they can be customized to fit within numerous themes. If you take a look at some of the most popular escape rooms within your locality, you will find that there is a wide variety of challenges for any type of puzzle solver. Some of them are call-backs to classic detective stories while others add a more modern twist to their themes. You can even find some that are themed around some of the biggest pop culture franchises. Here are some of the more popular escape room ideas that you can look out for.

1. Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is, without a doubt, the most famous detective character of all time. The influence of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character on modern detective narratives is unmistakable. From the use of deductive reasoning, the scientific method and the power of observation, Sherlock Holmes is the perfect theme for any escape room. You can find a theme based on some of the more popular Sherlock Holmes mystery cases or find a new mystery that can be solved using the Sherlock Holmes method.

2. Prison escape

This is another popular escape room theme as it can be customized to create an uncountable number of individual scenarios. The set-up for most prison escape themes either puts you in the place of a prisoner who needs to escape, or an innocent bystander (visitor or lawyer) who has been caught up in a prison riot situation. You have to find clues, solve puzzles, and collaborate with other players in order to escape from a prison lockdown situation safely without being detected by the antagonist characters.

3. The Treasure Hunt

This is a more family oriented escape room theme as it appeals to the younger members of the family. It can either be pirate themed or use a more modern take on the idea of a treasure hunt. The set up is usually similar; a rich individual (usually a pirate or a bank robber) has stashed their ill-gotten wealth in a secret location. Through deciphering clues in a treasure map, or by going through their personal belongings, you are supposed to solve multiple puzzles and locate the hidden treasure. To add some ‘spice’ to the game, there is usually a time limit for you to find the hidden treasure (usually an hour) before a rival group of treasure hunters gets there first.

4. Find the antidote

There are many set-up scenarios for a ‘find the antidote’ themed escape room. There could be a breakout of a contagious disease spreading fast throughout the country, or a zombie apocalypse might have just occurred. Regardless of the situation, you and your team are tasked with finding the antidote that would bring an end to the epidemic. Your task could either be to locate a vial of the antidote that has been lost or to hunt down the individual ingredients that can be used to formulate the antidote.

This is just a shot list of popular themes that can be found in escape rooms, the only limit to escape room themes is the imagination of the creators.
